He'll answer Nicky's questions earnestly, both the one he's asking and the one he's not asking. "I don't have a preference for models, no. As long as they are interesting, I'm happy to sketch just about anyone." He grins. "If you're asking about my sexual orientation however, it's just men."
He's a little upset at just how relieved he is that Joe qualifies that he'd drawn a friend, who is a woman. Having him continue to say that he's into men is an unexpected little piece of trivia. "They don't publish that in your biography, I had wondered," Nicky admits.
He's not racing to make his own statement, not because he doesn't want to be open, but because he's accepted a date with Joe, he thinks it should be fairly obvious.
"I'm beginning to understand some of your work," he admits. "An idealized sense of self?" He's back to prodding and teasing, a jest that Joe can't possibly be as handsome and beautiful as those works of art.

"My initial review was cutting and blunt, even if it was honest," he admits, because he still knows that he stands by his opinion. He might reshift, rethink, and change slightly, but he would never double back completely like a weak-spined coward.

"Why, Nicky," Joe answers, sounding pleased. "I thought you believed I was flattering myself, on all those paintings." He keeps his tone light and playful, though he is genuinely pleased by the compliment. He finds Nicky so attractive, it's good to know it goes both ways. "Do you use them? Handsome chap like you, I'm sure you'd get lots of messages," he adds, grinning.

"It's good practice," he tells Nicky, sounding serious though he has no intention of sketching Nicky Picasso-style. He'd rather make it realistic, really.
It's a good thing this isn't a video call, because the way Nicky blushes is not meant for anyone else's eyes, furious and terrible as it is, and just how much it makes him seem utterly at Joe's mercy. He is, though. "I said you were flattering your body, which I have not seen," he clarifies.

"Well, play your cards right and you might see it," Joe teases, openly flirtatious now because it seems Nicky is comfortable going there. "For artistic purposes, of course." He doesn't flatter himself in his paintings, but it's oddly sweet that Nicky thinks he might, in a strange backhanded way.
"Thank you, I think," he returns, when Nicky indirectly compliments his face. He arches an eyebrow as Nicky goes on about the kind of critic he is, and thinking Joe could truly be great.
"I thrashed against the words and took your advice, didn't I?" he muses, thoughtfully. "Have you considered wording your advice differently then, if you so want people to take it?" he inquires, his tone still light though they are going back to their old argument.
He grins, shaking his head. "Though I'm glad the famous art critic Nicolo Di Genova thinks I have potential," he adds, wryly. He's flattered, even if he probably shouldn't be.
How is he meant to play his cards right when it feels like he fucks up most of the time, especially in his romantic escapades. "Of course, artistic purposes only," he echoes, glad that Joe gave him that out so he didn't have to think about it.
Mainly, that he might have fucked up his chance before it even happened.
"You were willing to at least listen to my advice and invite me to sit for you. Whether that applies to the long term..." "If I were, I feel as if I would be paid better. I definitely wouldn't need a second job, if I were famous."

That gets a true laugh from Nicky, loud and appreciative, even as he says, "No, Joe, there is no one on this planet who would pay for me to strip for them." That's a strangely terrifying image, he admits, and one he doesn't think he wants to even consider.
He sips his coffee, staring out his window, knowing that Joe isn't about to get that secret so easily. "My second job is nothing you need to worry about, when we're sitting here talking about our first ones." He thinks that's a smooth enough transition. "And how you will be a famous artist soon, whose work will catapult you into the spotlight. Once you take my advice," is added with a hint of a smug smirk.
It's so nice to hear Nicky laugh, rich and full-bellied like this. Joe can't help but grin widely in return, delighted. He makes a small, considering noise, like he might be disagreeing. He would pay good money to watch Nicky strip, he thinks. But he won't actually say it.
"Mysterious," he comments, but doesn't push for more information. If Nicky doesn't want to reveal this much, Joe won't force him, not when their friendship is so new and tentative.
"Once I take your advice, yes," he agrees, amused. "That'll be soon. Saturday, actually. Fame is coming my way fast."
Yes, very mysterious. Nicky's eyes are cast back to the manuscript waiting for him to return to, thinking of how he'd tweaked his main character to be more like Joe. He knows that he's going to use the photos as reference, and that this new character will end up being one of the most effusive and complimented characters that he's ever written.
"Saturday, yes," Nicky agrees. "I still don't know if portraits of me will be the thing to crack your way into fame, but I think it will begin to expand your catalogue, give you a chance to truly show off your talent. I know I'll be very flattered to have something done of me."
Joe would be so flattered to be a character in a novel, Nicky will have to tell him at some point.
"It's worth a try," Joe teases, grinning. "It's good practice, even if it's not my shot at stardom. It's always nice to have new people to draw, to see if I can really capture what makes them unique." Nicky has proven to be unlike anyone else Joe knows already, and he's eager to see if he can paint his striking features accurately.
He hums, sounding fond. "You can keep some of the sketches, if you like any of them. I'll make sure they're flattering indeed," he adds, playfully.

"And if I get to keep some of the sketches, maybe I can even use them to encourage others to come and see you. A taste," he suggests, "before the meal."
